Contact with water or acidic media should be avoided because hydrolysis can generate cobalt hydroxide, which diminishes drying efficiency. Practical formulation guidance recommends pre‑dissolving the octoate in white spirit at 20–25 °C, then adding the solution to the alkyd resin under continuous stirring to ensure uniform distribution of catalytic sites. Compatibility extends to aromatic hydrocarbon solvents and certain epoxy modifiers, making cobalt octoate a versatile additive across a broad range of coating technologies.
