Modified cationic starch with a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.03–0.06 % is a high‑performance dry binder widely used in the pulp and paper sector. Produced from corn or wheat starch, the polymer is chemically functionalized with cationic groups—typically quaternary ammonium or hydroxypropyl‑trimethyl‑ammonium moieties—so that it remains soluble in alkaline media and carries a positive charge. This charge drives strong electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged cellulose fibers, promoting fiber flocculation and improving sheet formation, which translates into higher dry strength for both coated and kraft grades. When added at 0.5–1.0 % of the pulp mass, it enhances sheet smoothness, reduces energy consumption during drying, and increases resistance to mechanical stress. The starch is compatible with a range of retention aids and additives, such as anionic polyacrylates, colloidal kaolin, titanium dioxide, or starch‑based wet‑end additives, without causing precipitation, thus allowing formulation of stable emulsions and improved optical properties. In typical wet‑end applications the starch is dispersed at 70–80 °C for 5–10 minutes; its cationic character is retained across a pH range of 6–9, making it suitable for various printing processes (offset, flexographic) and for specialty papers used in hygiene, packaging, and high‑gloss applications. The product is fully biodegradable and free of chlorinated compounds, meeting ISO 14001 environmental criteria. When blended with other additives, for example colloidal kaolin, the emulsion stability is maintained and no settling occurs. Recommended dispersion temperature is 70–80 °C with a mixing time of 5–10 minutes. Stored in sealed containers the product retains its properties for up to 24 months. To maintain the performance of the modified cationic starch, store it in a dry, well‑ventilated area under typical warehouse conditions (approximately +25 °C) and protect it from direct sunlight. Moisture must be avoided, as excess humidity can cause agglomeration and loss of functionality. When the packaging remains intact, the product generally retains its quality for 12–24 months. During handling and transport, take care not to damage the containers and prevent contamination by foreign particles.
