Modified Starch for Textile

Global Optimals offers a modified starch for textile applications – an oxidized polymer modifier specifically engineered for yarn sizing and fabric aprating. Oxidation introduces additional hydroxyl groups onto the starch backbone, which enhances its ability to form aqueous gels and improves adhesion to both cellulose and synthetic fibers. In practice the oxidized starch is often blended with plasticizers such as glycerol or polyethylene glycol to lower viscosity at lower temperatures and to promote uniform film formation across the yarn surface. When used together with cross‑linking agents—commonly titanium dioxide‑based or epoxy resins—the resulting network further reinforces fiber strength, a benefit especially valuable for heavyweight denim, technical woven fabrics, and high‑tenacity polyester blends. The starch is compatible with reactive, direct, and disperse dyes, allowing it to be incorporated into multi‑stage dyeing processes without causing precipitation or uneven uptake. Applied at 3–5 % of fabric weight in a bath of 30–40 °C, it creates a strong yet flexible coating that can be removed during desizing by raising the temperature to 60–70 °C and adding a mild alkaline solution, which hydrolyzes the starch film. Its biodegradability stems from enzymatic hydrolysis of the glucose chains, ensuring complete disappearance of residues after 48 hours of washing. Stored in a dry, cool environment (5–25 °C) and protected from moisture and direct sunlight, the product retains its functional properties for over a year. In addition to sizing, the modified starch is employed in fabric printing, where it provides a uniform carrier layer that enhances dye adhesion and reduces the risk of mottling. Adjustments to the degree of oxidation can be made to tailor the balance between film strength and flexibility, enabling fine‑tuning for specific end‑use requirements such as increased tear resistance or greater elasticity.

Storage and handling

The modified starch should be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area at ambient temperatures (approximately 15 °C–25 °C) away from direct sunlight and moisture. When the original packaging remains intact, the typical shelf life is about 12 months. During handling, wear protective gloves and safety goggles, keep the material away from open flames and strong acids. Ensure the container is tightly sealed; any breach of packaging integrity requires immediate replacement.
