Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)

Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) 99.9% (CAS 107‑21‑1) is a high‑purity di‑alcohol widely used in the paint industry as a solvent, coagulant and antifreeze additive. With a molecular weight of 62.07 g/mol and a strongly polar hydroxyl functionality, MEG readily dissolves both aromatic and aliphatic pigments and additives, making it a versatile component in water‑based systems. In emulsion paints it stabilizes the dispersion by reducing particle size and preventing agglomeration, while in acrylic formulations it accelerates water evaporation, shortening drying time without compromising film integrity. When mixed with polyester resins, MEG acts as a reactive solvent that promotes cross‑linking, enhancing mechanical strength and adhesion, especially under high‑humidity conditions. As an antifreeze, it depresses the freezing point of water to about –20 °C and provides corrosion inhibition, which is valuable in cooling circuits for coating equipment. Compatibility considerations include its synergistic effect with glycol ethers, di‑oxides, and certain amine modifiers; however, excessive MEG can lower the solubility of high‑molecular‑weight polymers, so pilot trials are recommended. Typical dosage ranges from 5 % to 15 % of the total paint weight, adjusted according to desired viscosity and drying rate. Storage guidelines advise keeping MEG in sealed metal or plastic containers, at temperatures not exceeding 30 °C, in a dry environment protected from direct sunlight and moisture; exposure to strong oxidizers or alkaline agents should be avoided to prevent degradation. Under these conditions the shelf life exceeds 24 months. Beyond acrylic and emulsion coatings, MEG is employed in the synthesis of polyester resins, as a coolant in industrial heat‑exchange systems, and as a humectant in primer formulations. Its high purity minimizes the formation of insoluble residues, thereby extending equipment life and reducing maintenance intervals. Additional applications include rheology control in lacquer systems, plasticizer functions in polymer films, and as a carrier for specialty additives. Each batch undergoes rigorous quality verification by gas chromatography and spectroscopy, ensuring consistent performance across production runs.

Storage and handling

Monoethylene glycol must be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area, protected from direct sunlight and heat sources. Recommended storage temperature ranges from +5 °C to +25 °C; higher temperatures may increase evaporation and degrade quality. When packaging integrity is maintained, the typical shelf life is about 24 months. Handling requires protective gloves, safety goggles and adequate ventilation, and fire sources must be avoided. Ensure the plastic or metal containers remain intact, without dents or leaks, before use.
