Activated Bleaching Clay

Activated bleaching clay Pak-Merit BC (CAS 70131‑50‑9) is a high‑purity food‑grade adsorbent with ≥99 % purity and ≤1 % impurity content. Its pH range of 6.5‑7.5 provides neutral interaction during oil processing, while moisture ≤0.5 % ensures product stability. The clay is widely applied in the food and oil‑fat industry for refining vegetable oils by removing free fatty acids and pigments, eliminating colour impurities in fatty‑acid production, and filtering glycerine in trans‑esterification processes. The material consists of layered aluminosilicate particles that develop a high specific surface area, enabling simultaneous adsorption of polar acids and non‑polar pigments. In typical refinery schemes the clay is added as a dry powder after degumming, mixed at 30‑60 °C to promote contact, and then the mixture is passed through a filtration unit where the adsorbed contaminants are retained on the solid phase. For enhanced selectivity, the clay can be used in combination with activated carbon or cation‑exchange resins, especially when targeting specific free fatty acids. Particle size distribution in the range of 20‑100 µm is preferred to maintain low pressure drop across columns. Recommended storage conditions are a dry, cool environment protected from direct sunlight and moisture, with sealed 25 kg bags. Under these conditions the shelf life exceeds 24 months and adsorption efficiency remains ≥95 % after multiple regeneration cycles. During transport avoid contact with strong oxidizers and keep the temperature between +5 °C and +25 °C. Regeneration is achieved by heating the spent clay to 150 °C for about 2 hours, which restores its adsorption capacity. Practical dosage in oil refining typically ranges from 0.5 % to 2 % of the oil weight, depending on the level of free fatty acids and colour intensity, and process monitoring should include periodic analysis of acid value and colour to verify performance.

Storage and handling

The activated bleaching clay should be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area at ambient temperatures (approximately 15‑25 °C), protected from direct sunlight and moisture. When the packaging remains intact, the typical shelf life is 12‑24 months. Operators must wear protective gloves and safety glasses, avoid inhaling dust and skin contact. The multi‑layer polyethylene container must stay undamaged, without leaks or deformation, to preserve product quality.
