Polyvinyl Alcohol PVA 1799

Polyvinyl alcohol PVA 1799 (CAS 9002‑89‑5) is a fully hydrolyzed polymer with 98‑99 % purity and a viscosity of 25‑35 mPa·s at 25 °C. Chemically it consists of repeating –CH₂‑CH(OH)‑ units derived from complete hydrolysis of polyvinyl chloride, which gives a high degree of polymerization and a low residual acetate content. This linear structure enables extensive hydrogen‑bonding, resulting in a strong, flexible film that adheres well to a wide range of substrates. In practice PVA 1799 is often blended with plasticizers such as glycerol or di‑ethyl‑trifluorophosphate to increase film flexibility, and with surface‑active agents (e.g., tertiary amines) to improve emulsion stability. Its excellent solubility in cold water and low cross‑link density make it a preferred binder in water‑based adhesive formulations, where it can deliver bond strengths up to 30 MPa and provide resistance to common organic solvents. In the paint sector PVA 1799 is frequently combined with acrylic resins, enabling the production of uniform dispersions that reduce bubble formation, enhance UV‑light resistance, and improve film integrity. For textile coatings the polymer is added to polyester or acrylic dispersion systems, ensuring even fiber distribution and stronger adhesion to synthetic fabrics. In paper manufacturing PVA 1799 acts as a fiber stabilizer, increasing sheet strength, reducing breakage, and improving printability. Recommended processing guidelines include using stainless‑steel equipment, maintaining solution temperatures between 20 °C and 60 °C, and ensuring adequate ventilation, as prolonged exposure to hot water may generate minor vapor release. For storage, keep the material in a dry, cool environment at 15‑25 °C, protected from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent changes in molecular weight and preserve its performance.

Storage and handling

To maintain the quality of PVA 1799, store the polymer in a dry, well‑ventilated area at ambient temperatures (approximately 15 °C–25 °C), protected from direct sunlight and sudden temperature fluctuations. Typical shelf life is 12–24 months, but the condition of the container and absence of condensation should be verified before use. During handling, wear protective gloves and safety glasses, avoid exposure to open flames and strong oxidizers. Keep the packaging tightly sealed and ensure that transport protects the product from mechanical damage and moisture.
