This strong alkaline reagent is essential for cotton mercerization, fabric bleaching and desizing processes. At 50 % concentration the solution reaches pH ≈ 13, delivering enhanced luster, increased fiber strength and improved dye uptake. Sodium hydroxide acts as a powerful swelling agent for cellulose fibers; during mercerization it partially dissolves hemicellulose, opens the fiber’s micro‑fibril structure and re‑orients the cellulose chains, which results in a smoother surface, higher tensile strength and better affinity for reactive dyes. In bleaching operations NaOH is commonly combined with hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite, where it raises the pH to promote oxidative attack on natural pigments, accelerating color removal while preserving fiber integrity. For desizing, the alkali hydrolyzes starch and other sizing agents, allowing complete removal of the protective coating without damaging synthetic blends. Beyond these core steps, caustic soda is used to neutralize residual acids after dye fixation, to improve adhesion of polymer finishes such as polyester resin or acrylic binders, and to aid in the preparation of blended fabrics where it helps balance the pH of multi‑component baths. Granular form is preferred for large‑scale production where on‑site dilution gives precise control over solution temperature and concentration; the ready‑made 50 % solution is convenient for smaller batches and for processes that require rapid pH adjustment. Storage must be in a dry, well‑ventilated area at 15‑25 °C, as NaOH is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture, forming sodium carbonate if exposed to air. Operators should wear nitrile or butyl rubber gloves, safety goggles and chemical‑resistant clothing; any skin contact should be flushed with plenty of water and neutralized with a mild acetic acid solution. Typical dosing ranges from 2 % to 5 % of the fabric weight, with bath temperatures maintained between 20 °C and 60 °C to ensure efficient hydrolysis while avoiding fiber degradation. This grade of caustic soda provides consistent performance across the full spectrum of textile pretreatment, from fiber opening to final finishing, supporting high‑quality production in modern mills.

Storage and handling

Caustic soda should be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Maintain ambient temperatures between +5 °C and +30 °C; lower temperatures are permissible if condensation is avoided. Shelf life is typically up to 24 months provided the packaging remains intact. During handling wear protective gloves, goggles and clothing, and avoid premature contact with water as the exothermic reaction can generate heat. Ensure the sealed polyethylene containers show no signs of leaks, punctures or deformation.
