Chemically it is the calcium salt of stearic acid, formed by neutralising the fatty acid with calcium hydroxide, which gives it both lubricating and surface‑active properties. The commercial grade typically contains 6.5‑7.5 % active ingredient, providing reliable lubrication and anti‑adhesion in pulp processing. When added to cellulose suspensions, calcium stearate creates a thin hydrophobic film on the fiber surface, improving sheet press glide, reducing dust generation and enhancing coating uniformity. The reduced inter‑fiber friction also allows higher machine speeds without compromising paper quality. In PVC formulations it works as a secondary plasticizer, compatible with conventional phthalate plasticizers, increasing flexibility and improving crack resistance at low temperatures. It is often blended with glycerol, polysorbate‑80 and vegetable oils in cosmetic emulsions, where it stabilises the oil‑in‑water system, prevents phase separation and contributes to a smooth skin‑feel. In construction mixes, calcium stearate is used in waterproofing coatings, dry‑mix mortars and asphalt emulsions, where it raises water repellency and lowers adhesion to mould surfaces, facilitating release and reducing surface defects. The product should be stored in a dry, temperature‑controlled environment (5‑25 °C) in sealed containers to avoid moisture uptake, which can diminish its lubricating efficiency. Operators are advised to wear protective gloves and goggles, as fine particles may irritate skin and eyes.
