Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) is a non‑woven reinforcement made from E‑glass fibers, designed for hand lay‑up and Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) processes. The fibers are produced from high‑purity silica glass with controlled amounts of alumina and boron, which give the mat excellent chemical resistance to most resins, solvents and alkaline environments. The mat weight ranges from 225 to 900 g/m² and fiber length is 50 mm, providing a uniform structure and excellent resin uptake for both epoxy and emulsion binders. Its open, porous architecture allows rapid infiltration of low‑viscosity epoxy systems as well as more viscous polyester or vinyl‑ester formulations, reducing void content and improving fiber volume fraction. Available with powder or emulsion binders, the material can be tailored to specific lamination requirements; powder binders are commonly paired with thermally cured epoxy resins, while emulsion binders are preferred for water‑based systems and low‑temperature cure cycles. With an approximate density of 0,45 g/cm³ and high tensile strength, CSM is widely used in manufacturing bathtub and shower trays, boat hulls, pipe sections, and construction panels. In the automotive sector it serves for lightweight body panels and interior components, and in aerospace for interior bulkheads and non‑structural skins. For storage, keep rolls in a dry, ventilated area at +5 °C to +30 °C, protected from direct sunlight and aggressive chemicals. Operators should wear gloves and a mask, as the glass fibers may irritate skin and respiratory passages; adequate ventilation and local exhaust extraction are recommended during cutting or sanding. Prior to lamination, a pre‑drying step at 60‑80 °C for 30‑60 minutes is often employed to remove residual moisture and enhance resin adhesion to the glass fibers.

To maintain the performance of CSM chopped strand mat, store the material in a dry, well‑ventilated area at ambient temperatures (approximately 15 °C‑25 °C) away from direct sunlight and moisture. Typical shelf life is 12‑24 months when the original packaging remains intact. During handling, wear protective gloves and safety glasses, and avoid exposure to water or contaminating chemicals. Ensure the polyethylene wrapping is undamaged; any tears or leaks require repackaging into a new sealed container.
