Barium Sulfate — Synthetic

Synthetic barium sulfate is a high-quality chemical raw material for paint and coating production. This inert white powder exhibits exceptional chemical stability, making it suitable for formulations that must resist both alkaline and acidic environments. Its very low solubility in water (≈0.0001 g/L at 25 °C) means it acts as an inert filler that increases density and mechanical strength without risk of migration or degradation. In lacquer systems it is frequently combined with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, creating multi‑component pigment dispersions that improve hiding power and ultraviolet resistance. When incorporated into polymer emulsions such as acrylics or polyurethanes, barium sulfate raises viscosity, reduces moisture uptake, and enhances adhesion to metal and glass substrates. In powder coatings the fine particle size (D50 = 0.7–3.0 µm) promotes uniform load distribution during the curing cycle, resulting in smoother surfaces and higher gloss levels. For high‑gloss clear coats it functions as an optical scatterer, diminishing the “wet” gloss effect and increasing scratch resistance. In the plastics sector (polypropylene, PVC) it is used as a dry filler to improve thermal stability, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, and boost chemical resistance. Practical handling recommends dispersing the sulfate in water or a compatible solvent using high‑speed mixers to prevent agglomeration before addition to the formulation. Typical dosage in lacquer formulations ranges from 5 % to 30 % of the total dry‑component weight, depending on the desired film thickness and optical properties.

Storage and handling

Barium sulfate must be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Recommended storage temperature is between +5 °C and +25 °C; higher temperatures may cause particle agglomeration. When the packaging remains intact, the typical shelf life is about 24 months. Handling requires protective gloves, safety goggles and a dust mask to avoid inhalation. Ensure the sealed polyethylene container remains airtight to prevent moisture ingress.
