Sodium Sulfide (Na₂S)

Sodium sulfide Na₂S (CAS 1313‑82‑2) is supplied from our Tashkent warehouse as flakes with a purity of ≥ 60 % and impurity level ≤ 50 ppm, making it an ideal reducing agent for textile and leather applications. When added to water Na₂S undergoes rapid hydrolysis, generating hydrosulfide (HS⁻) and sodium hydroxide, which creates a strongly alkaline solution (pH ≈ 11‑12). This high‑pH environment efficiently breaks down keratin structures, so the resulting hydrosulfide is widely used for de‑hairing in leather processing and for bating, where it softens the hide and improves its water uptake. In textile manufacturing Na₂S is employed not only for fiber bleaching but also as a reducer in “sulfide‑reducer‑oxidizer” systems that stabilize azo dyes, enhancing colour brightness and fastness. It is a key component in the viscose and acetate fiber production routes, providing sulfide ions that form polysulfide linkages and increase the mechanical and chemical resistance of the regenerated cellulose. Typical usage concentrations for dye‑reduction or bleaching range from 0.5 % to 2 % w/w, with contact times of 5‑30 minutes depending on the desired degree of reduction. Storage requirements: keep in a dry, well‑ventilated area at +5…+25 °C, in sealed containers to avoid moisture and acid exposure. During transport follow hazardous‑goods rules – UN 1824 labeling, wooden crates with internal moisture barriers. Full technical documentation (TDS, SDS, COA) is provided electronically after order confirmation. Sodium sulfide is classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance; handling requires protective gloves, goggles and adequate ventilation. Storage must be monitored to prevent moisture ingress and the consequent release of H₂S gas, and when working with aqueous solutions a proper exhaust system should be used to capture any emitted sulfide vapour.

Storage and handling

Sodium sulfide must be stored in a dry, well‑ventilated area, protected from moisture, direct sunlight and heat sources. Recommended storage temperature is between +5 °C and +25 °C; higher temperatures increase the risk of H₂S release and product degradation. When packaging integrity is maintained, the shelf life is typically 12–24 months. Handling requires protective gloves, goggles and respiratory protection, avoidance of water contact until use, and inspection of bags or drums for any damage before unloading.
