Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) is a high‑performance inorganic dispersant and corrosion inhibitor widely used in water‑based paints and primers. STPP consists of three phosphate units linked by oxygen bridges, giving it a strong ability to chelate calcium, magnesium and other hardness‑causing metal ions. The resulting soluble complexes prevent the precipitation of calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide, which are common causes of pigment flocculation and surface defects in coatings. In paint technology STPP is employed in acrylic, emulsion and polyurethane systems, where it stabilizes pigment particles, reduces agglomeration, and enhances gloss and color uniformity. It is often paired with polymeric dispersants such as polyacrylates or polysulfonates to achieve synergistic stability in complex formulations. As a corrosion inhibitor, STPP is incorporated into metal primers, where it forms a protective film that binds iron ions and slows electrochemical oxidation. In detergent formulations STPP acts as a builder, sequestering hardness ions in hard water and thereby boosting surfactant efficiency for grease removal. In the ceramics industry it is added to glaze mixes; its calcium‑binding capacity lowers the melting point of the glaze and reduces surface blemishes. Industrial cleaning agents benefit from STPP’s ability to dissolve mineral scale and aid in the removal of stubborn deposits. The material is supplied as a dry powder in sealed bags, facilitating storage and transport. Recommended storage conditions are a dry environment at 5 °C‑30 °C, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Operators should wear protective gloves, safety glasses and ensure adequate ventilation.
